Sydney Charles Smith was born in Woodville in 1888. He developed an interest in photography and in 1909 opened a studio in Newtown, Wellington.
He shared much the same technical excellence as shown by other New Zealand photographers Joseph Zachariah, Frederick George Radcliffe and Ernest de Tourret.
He produced a large volume of photographic work right up until the 1960s.
Smith died on 27 April 1972, age 83 years. He is buried at Taita Lawn Cemetery in the Hutt Valley.
